Basketball shots, 4 September 2010

I was taking a break from a basketball game and took out my camera to take some action photos. This was the second time I shot a basketball game. The first time was 2 years ago (yet to be posted on this blog). Somehow, I prefer the previous shots, probably from the angle of shooting...

This album was shot with Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 lens. I set the aperture to F2.8 in order to get the depth of field I wanted. With the aperture wide opened on a hot Saturday afternoon, I did not need to worry about the shutter speed. The shutter speed could easily hit a thousandth of a second to freeze the moment of action. Actually, 1/640 second is good enough for the game though.

3 posts were written for this album:
- Attempting block shot
- Please stand up. No...
- I believe I can fly

Little Princesses' birthday party, 14 Aug 2010

I was invited to a friend's kids' birthday party on 14 Aug 2010 as a photographer. This would be my second party assignment. Kids are lovely and very energetic, but this always give a big headache to photographers. They like to run around and will never sit still!

Healthy kids! =D

The party was held at a multi-purpose hall in the HDB estate. Just a void deck with shelter, fans and lights which only turn on after 7pm (no matter how dark the area is, you just have to wait till 7pm. Hmm... or you have to keep calling until the technician comes down to turn on the light.).

For this photoshoot assignment, I wrote about:
- how I used the aperture when the kids blew the birthday candles (Host behind the birthday cake)
- how I stopped down the EV to get a fast shutter speed in a real dark environment (Dancing in the dark)
- how I turned off the flash when the kids walked from a sheltered corridor to under the sun (Sisters' bonding)

Learn from the expert (Neil van Niekerk)

I first discovered this photographer back in September 2009, when I accepted my first wedding shoot. That time, I did not have a flash unit (always liked the photos without flash, and due to the fact that internal flash on camera always gives very harsh image) and have no idea how to use flash.

I searched on the web to try picking some tips on flash and I came across Neil's blog. To my surprise, this blog, unlike other wedding photographers, shares all his knowledge on photographs and describes his settings for his photo shoot. You can really learn things from this blog, much better and worth more the time than looking at some photographers that only show off their work without sharing their insights.

This is one of the reason I started writing blog, trying to share some of my shots through explaining the settings I used. Although nothing much to share and the settings I used were not too complicated, I hope I can help some beginners picking up their own technic and start moving forward from there.

Hmm... I have not read Neil's blog for quite a while. I guess he should have updated many informatives posts on it. Feel free to surf around.

Lets learn from the expert!!
